Microsoft Store Screenshot Requirements and Sizes

The Short Answer

Quick answer: Microsoft Store screenshots are PNG files of at least 1366 x 768 pixels for desktop, with 4K (3840 x 2160) supported. One screenshot is required, and you can add up to 10 for desktop. Microsoft suggests at least four per device family. Each file can be up to 50 MB.

I read Microsoft Learn's two pages on Store screenshots and images on October 26, 2026. One covers MSIX apps, and the other covers MSI and EXE apps. Both show an August 24, 2026 update date. I checked the screenshot counts on both, because they don't quite agree.

Here's every size, the rules for each image, and the spots where Microsoft differs from other stores.

Every Size at a Glance

Microsoft splits its images into screenshots, Store logos, and trailers with extra art.

Every image here is a PNG. Screenshots and Store logos can be up to 50 MB each.

How Many Screenshots You Need

Only one screenshot is required, for any device family. You can add up to 10 desktop screenshots, and up to 8 for each other device family.

The MSIX page suggests at least four screenshots for each device family your app supports. The FAQ on the MSI and EXE page goes further. It recommends 5 to 8 for each supported device type.

Don't add screenshots for device families your app doesn't support.

Desktop screenshots also show to customers on Surface Hub devices. So a desktop set covers both.

Screenshots appear in your listing in order. After you upload them, you can drag and drop to change that order.

Desktop Screenshot Size

Desktop screenshots must be 1366 x 768 pixels or larger. Microsoft supports 4K images, at 3840 x 2160.

Each one must be a PNG file. It can be landscape or portrait, and it can't be larger than 50 MB.

That's a minimum, not an exact size. A 1920 x 1080 capture clears it with room to spare.

This is looser than some stores. Our guide to Chrome Web Store image sizes shows a store that takes only two exact screenshot sizes.

Microsoft also notes that Visual Studio has a tool to help you capture screenshots.

Xbox and Holographic Sizes

Other device families have their own minimums.

Xbox screenshots must be at least 1920 x 1080 pixels. They also support 4K images at 3840 x 2160.

Holographic screenshots, for mixed reality headsets, must be at least 1268 x 720. They support 4K too.

Each family gets its own set in the listing. That way, the right screenshots appear for the device a customer is using.

If your app runs on Xbox, check the Store logos section below too. Some of those images become required.

Keep the Bottom Third Clear

This rule shapes every screenshot. Microsoft says text overlays may appear on the bottom third of your screenshots.

So keep critical visuals and text in the top two thirds of the image.

The same warning shows up again and again on the page. It applies to poster art, box art and super hero art as well.

Plan each capture with that in mind. Put the key screen, chart or button in the upper part of the frame.

The bottom third can hold calm, simple parts of your interface. Avoid placing anything there that people must read.

What to Leave Out of Screenshots

Microsoft is strict here. Its MSIX page gives two clear rules.

  1. 1Don't add extra logos, icons or marketing messages to your screenshots.
  2. 2Don't use extremely light or dark colors, or highly contrasting stripes, that may make overlay text hard to read.

That first rule matters if you're used to Google Play or the App Store. Those listings often use captions and colored backgrounds around the screen.

For the Microsoft Store, let the app speak for itself. Show real screens of real features.

You still get room for words. Each screenshot can carry a caption, which the next section covers.

Captions Up to 200 Characters

You can give each screenshot a short caption of 200 characters or less. It should describe what the screenshot shows.

Captions are where your selling points belong. Since marketing text stays out of the image, use the caption to explain the benefit.

Keep each one short and specific. Name the feature and what it helps the customer do.

Write captions for each language too. Microsoft asks for captions per language, along with the images.

Read each caption next to its screenshot before you publish. A caption that describes a different screen confuses people fast.

Screenshots for Each Language

If you create Store listings in more than one language, each language gets its own listing page.

Microsoft says you'll need to upload images for each language separately. That's true even when you use the same images everywhere.

You'll also add captions for each language.

With a lot of languages, this adds up. Microsoft suggests exporting your listing data and working offline to update them faster.

Before you translate, decide which screens truly change by language. Our guide to localizing store listings covers that planning step.

The 1:1 App Tile Icon

The 1:1 App tile icon is 300 x 300 pixels. It appears on various Store pages for Windows 10, Windows 11 and Xbox.

Microsoft strongly recommends it for apps. If you skip it, the Store uses the image from your app package.

If you do upload it, the Store gives it priority over the one in your package.

That gives you control. You can tune the Store icon without shipping a new app build.

Keep it simple and readable at small sizes. It's often the first image a customer sees in a list.

Poster Art and Box Art for Games

Games get two more logo images.

The 2:3 Poster art is 720 x 1080 or 1440 x 2160 pixels. For games, it's the main logo on Windows 10, Windows 11 and Xbox. Microsoft strongly recommends it.

The 1:1 Box art is 1080 x 1080 or 2160 x 2160. If you don't provide poster art, the box art becomes your main logo.

Both can include your game's name. If they do, the text should meet accessible readability rules.

On Xbox, both images are required and must include the title. The title has to sit in the top two thirds. The Win32 page lists 1:1 box art as the required Store logo for MSI and EXE apps.

16:9 Super Hero Art

The 16:9 Super hero art is 1920 x 1080 or 3840 x 2160 pixels, as a PNG. Microsoft recommends it for every app, whatever devices you target.

On Windows 10, version 1607 or later, it's the main image at the top of your listing. It also appears after any trailers finish playing.

For games with trailers, it's required. Without it, your trailers won't appear at the top of the listing.

It may also be used to feature your app in promotional layouts across the Store.

One rule stands out. This image must not include the product's title or any other text.

Super Hero Art Design Rules

Microsoft gives a long list of tips for this image.

DoAvoid
Use a dynamic image tied to your appStock photos or generic visuals
Put key details in the centerKey visuals in the bottom third
Minimize empty spaceYour app's UI or device imagery
Keep it free of textFlags, political or religious symbols

The page also asks you to leave out insensitive gestures, nudity, gambling, currency, drugs, tobacco and alcohol. It also rules out weapons pointed at the viewer and heavy violence.

Some layouts crop this image, and some add a gradient over the bottom third. That's why the center matters most.

Providing it lets Microsoft consider you for featuring. It doesn't guarantee a spot.

Trailers: Up to 15

You can add up to 15 trailers. Each needs a video file, a thumbnail image and a title.

ItemRule
Video formatMP4 or MOV
Resolution1920 x 1080
File sizeUnder 2 GB
ThumbnailPNG, 1920 x 1080
Title255 characters or fewer

Microsoft recommends 60 seconds or less. Keep key information in the center, because some layouts crop the top and bottom.

Don't include age ratings in Store trailers. You can add captions as a VTT file and audio descriptions as an MP3.

For how stores compare on video, see our guide to app preview video specs.

Trailers Need Super Hero Art

This link between trailers and art trips people up.

Trailers show at the top of your Store listing only when you include a 16:9 Super hero art image. Microsoft says this for games in particular.

The art then appears after your trailers finish playing.

Trailers also show only on Windows 10, version 1607 or later, which includes Xbox.

Like every other field on the listing page, trailers must pass certification before you can publish them. So plan the art and the video together, and submit them in the same update.

Where PlayMockUp Fits

Microsoft's rules push against framed marketing shots. Its screenshots should be plain captures, and its super hero art should skip UI and devices.

So capture clean screens for this store, at 1920 x 1080 or larger. Put your selling points in the captions.

Your app may also ship elsewhere. If it's on Google Play or the App Store, our free mockup generator builds framed screenshot sets for those listings. It exports at their store sizes.

Keep the two sets separate. A framed image with a caption baked in can fit one store's listing and break another's rules.
